This section tips related to packing for international patients visiting the United States of America for health care and medical treatment.

Packing for Your Trip

What is the most effective way to begin packing?
One way is to make an inventory of everything you wish to take. Go through your medicine cabinet, bureau, dresser and closet and write down "can't do without" items. Check each item off after you place it in your suitcase or ̉carry-onÓ bag. Visit a travel specialties store where you can find travel-sized containers, space-saving collapsible hair dryers, and other items designed to make your load lighter.

What types of clothing should I bring?
Research the climate or the area in which you will be staying, and pack clothing suitable for the weather conditions and seasonal variances in temperature of your destination. Contact the National Weather Service or The Weather Channel for updated information about weather in the city you wish to visit. Travel agents can often provide a standard packing list to guide you. Creating a general itinerary for the time you will spend in the U.S. will allow you to plan for the types of clothing you should bring. Many hotels offer dry cleaning, and some provide do-it-yourself laundry services. Be sure to ask when you make your hotel reservations.

Other Packing Guidelines

  • Pack a travel bag with personal items for use in case your luggage is temporarily lost. Pack valuables, medications, medical records, films, passport, etc. in a ̉carry-onÓ bag in case this occurs.
  • Follow the luggage limits of the international airlines to reduce the risk of losing baggage.
  • Ship items in advance to make travel easier. Information about freight and shipping services can be obtained through local travel agents. Insure any valuable items you ship overseas. Check with your accommodations for the appropriate delivery address.
  • Label all of your baggage inside and out with your name and the address of your accommodations in the U.S.
  • Make sure you can carry your luggage for at least a half kilometer. If not, you may wish to purchase a folding luggage trolley.
  • When baggage is checked in at flight time, make sure that correct flight details appear on the airline baggage tags.
