This section discusses gratuities or "tipping" in the United States as it applies to international visitors.

GRATUITIES OR "TIPPING"

In the U.S., "tipping" is a way of showing your appreciation for a service rendered (for example, you would tip a taxi/cab driver or waiter/waitress, and for room service, maid service, baggage assistance, etc.). For food service, the rule of thumb is 15 % of the total bill. Generally, no tip is necessary at self service or cafeteria/counter service types of restaurants. (Click on Food for more information.) The tip is not included in the price of your meal unless it is stated on the menu or the bill.

For other services, a few dollars, depending on the type of service offered, is acceptable. At airports, it is customary to tip at least one dollar per piece of luggage checked in as baggage.
