Uniquely American Questions
This section discusses sports in the United
States as it applies to international visitors.
SPORTS
In general, Americans love a good competition, and that includes the
wide world of sports. Professional sports in the U.S. include football,
basketball, baseball, soccer, hockey, golf, boxing, tennis and many more.
The most popular sports are football, basketball, and baseball, and hockey.
Larger cities in the U.S. host sports teams that assume the name of the
city. For example, the city of Boston in Massachusetts hosts the "Boston
Red Sox" baseball team, while the city of Dallas hosts the "Dallas
Cowboys" football team. These teams are a source of pride (and tourism)
for the cities and states that host them. Most major sports are featured
on television and radio and are attended by avid fans.
On a more individual front, Americans are seeking to become more physically
fit and are generally interested in information that will benefit their
health. Children are required to pass physical fitness courses throughout
their primary and secondary years. Many Americans participate in some
form of fitness including intramural sports, personal training, walking
or jogging, weight lifting, swimming, etc.
