This section discusses sales tax in the United
States as it applies to international visitors.
SALES TAX
Most states have sales tax on purchases and services, but sales tax and
the products that sales taxes are levied on vary from state to state.
Sales tax cannot be refunded by the U.S.
Federal Government. State taxes are generally not charged to diplomats
and employees of certain international organizations who have been issued
a tax exempt card. This card must be presented at time of purchase in
order for taxes to be waived. Contact the U.S.
Customs Service for more information or to find out if you can apply
for the tax exempt card.
In some states, you may have to pay sales taxes on hotels
and other tourist attractions. Visit the City/State
pages to access specific information about sales taxes in the state you
are visiting.
