Medical Consultations
If you are seeking a physician consultation, we suggest you send your complete medical history, along with any applicable x-ray films and laboratory test results. Once a physician has reviewed your medical history, we will contact you about the recommended course of treatment and whether it is advisable to travel to the United States for treatment.

Once we've determined treatment at GW Hospital is appropriate, we will schedule all of your physician appointments including diagnostic and laboratory tests and procedures, as well as surgical procedures if necessary. Appointment availability depends on the nature and urgency of the medical situation.

Primary and Specialty Care
Primary care and specialty outpatient care is provided by The George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates (MFA), a 200 member multi-specialty physician practice group, that provides comprehensive care in over 23 specialty areas and 25 subspecialties.

Together, the physicians and the hospital provide coordinated care - from those with complex and life threatening conditions to those seeking executive physicals while here in the United States.

Prices, Procedures, Payments
You will be asked to provide information about payment and medical history prior to any medical treatment. Treatment at the cancer center includes radiologic diagnostic tools, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, bone marrow transplantation, and surgery. The cancer team treats a variety of patients with special expertise in head and neck cancer, breast cancer, gynecologic cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, and leukemia. Medical services for cancer treatment are strengthened by a bone marrow transplant treatment unit, oncology inpatient unit, outpatient radiology services, hospice referrals, and patient support services including onsite support groups.

Cardiovascular Care
The cardiac center provides one of the most comprehensive programs available for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, including a rapid treatment program for patients with acute heart attacks. Patients receive assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation of individual needs from a team of experienced cardiologists, surgeons, nurses, and technicians. Services include non-invasive testing, diagnostic cardiac catheterization, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology studies and cardiac rehabilitation.

Emergency Medicine
The George Washington University Hospital has one of the premier emergency departments in the country with a long history of providing medicine in a caring and efficient environment. In 1981, GW's Emergency Department played a major role in saving the life of then President Ronald Reagan after an assassination attempt left him severely wounded. As a Level-I Trauma Center, the department cares for about 45,000 patients each year including serious injuries. The department of emergency medicine serves as a local resource to the Foggy Bottom community including residents, employers, and visitors to our nation's capital. A team of physicians work in cooperation with other in-house specialists to provide immediate treatment for stroke, heart attacks, trauma and other life-threatening conditions.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
As medical technology improves, more and more surgical procedures are performed with minimally invasive techniques. As an alternative to traditional "open" surgeries, minimally invasive surgeries result in reduced scarring, shortened hospital stays and decreased recovery times - all of which contribute to improved patient care.

Surgeons at GW Hospital lead the region in the number of minimally invasive procedures performed each year, including urological procedures, arthroscopic surgery, breast biopsy, splenectomy, intestinal surgery, and cholecystectomy. GW Hospital is perhaps best known for its special expertise and advanced technology in treating gastroenterological disorders including gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD).

Neurology and Neurosurgery
The neurology and neurosurgery departments together comprise the GW Neurological Institute. The institute is internationally known for treating an entire range of neurological problems, from chronic back pain and sleep disorders to rare tumors of the brain. Special areas of expertise include: cranial base surgery, neuroradiological techniques, and the treatment of neuromuscular and sleep disorders, spinal injuries, epilepsy, stroke, and pain management.

Women's health specialist coordinate care from a variety of clinical departments including: labor and delivery, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, cardiology, and urology.
